It takes a brave angler to fish the stormy elements at night, but it takes an absolute mad one to do a 12 hour over night session off the back of a status orange rain and thunderstorm warning. Some may call it questionable behaviour but most anglers would understand the time and commitment that is put in to their desired sport. In a recent outing with Alan Hughes he absolutely demonstrated the lengths he went to in order to succeed on his latest fishing outing.
Fishing the surf beaches of “sunny south east” (not so much these days) Alan fished 3 rods for on his overnight expedition. Not to be deterred by the anglers who fished the Wexford area the night before being plagued by weed and heinous tidal pull, Alan was determined to pull a bass out of the Irish Sea along with a the off chance of an autumnal shore spur, a well sought after catch.
With the weather wet and wild to say the least, bass started to produce to rag baits on clipped down rigs at distance in the surf.
With mackerel and squid baits which had been fishing for a substantial part of the evening weren’t touched, the baits were switched up. A large sandeel presented delicately on a 6/0 pulley rig. Just as the tide turned fishing the sandeel about 5 minutes a substantial knock on the rod which was definitely a good fish. After striking in and battling the fish it was landed, a lovely shore bullhuss.
All in all a great night was had with lots of species keeping them busy all night. Whiting, flats, bass and a small late season hound. A good mixed bag of fish on a mark that hasn’t fished well in a good few weeks.
Congratulations to Alan on his excellent session and a fine shore huss, a fish of a lifetime for many anglers. It just shows the importance of showing up. Although there was a great level of talent involved we cant stress the importance of passion and determination to get results. Well in Alan look forward to your next session
